Woodwinds Farm is nestled in the gorgeous backwoods of Independent Hill, Virginia, a little drive south of Washington, DC. The original farmhouse, a two bedroom cabin, was built over two-hundred years ago on a strong stone foundation. After purchasing the cabin in 1973, Olin Bockes (the former owner) and his family constructed the larger portion over a period of seven years.
Being located just miles from our Nation's capital, as well as the Pentagon, Fort Belvoir and Quantico Marine Base, we began renting the property out to military families and friends seeking a place to stay while they visited the DC area. After several people told us how much they enjoyed their stay, we began considering renting the house full-time, and promptly posted it on Airbnb.
For several years families stayed at the farm, all of whom have absolutely loved the experience. Whether one would rather sit, relax and enjoy the nature around, or hike many acres of land, or bird-watch eagles and geese, or listen to music on vinyl records, or tour nearby attractions, there was always a little something for everyone. As past guests have said, it really is a nature-lover’s dream retreat.
In December 2021, Woodwinds Farm was sold to Prince William County. The farm is sadly, no longer available for rent, however, it remains as gorgeous as ever. Both Olin and Grace Bockes, the owners of the property for the past 50 years, passed at age 94. Olin had been a member of the PWC Landfill Citizens Advisory Committee for many years. The County will use the northern part of the land for a buffer between the landfill and Deer Valley Estates, a residential housing development.
